Mineralogists are burning the midnight oil to determine how the Hope Diamond got its blue color.
Taken from its case at night, a few precious atoms are shaved off and shot through a mass spectrometer to study its chemical makeup. A particularly high concentration of boron makes diamonds like this blue, and may have come from an ocean plate being thrust into Earth’s magma-filled depths a billion years ago.
